Measuring What Matters: Our First Impact Report

The Aotearoa Circle is marking an important milestone with the release of our first Impact Report, providing a clear account of what has been collectively delivered with our Partners since we formed in 2019.

The report sets out progress against our vision, highlighting practical outcomes achieved through collaboration with our public and private sector Partners. It also reflects the insights of Partners on the impact of this work, and the momentum building across climate, nature and economic resilience.

Circle Chief Executive, Vicki Watson says the report also offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on the legacy being shaped for Aotearoa New Zealand.

“It points to our shared responsibility to strengthen both our economy and the natural environment that sustains it, for current and future generations. That understanding is already evident among our Partners in the way they contribute tirelessly to workstreams, legal opinions, climate and nature scenarios, reports, and their own organisational strategies.”

While acknowledging there is still much to be done in this decade of delivery, the report also highlights encouraging examples of impact already flowing through Partners’ organisations, including:

  • Genesis signing off a budget of $1 million per annum through to 2030 to protect and restore nature around its communities, following participation in The Circle’s TNFD bootcamp.
  • Air New Zealand investing $1.2 million across more than 100 projects as a result of an impacts and dependencies report to its Board after attending the TNFD bootcamp.
  • Westpac shifting half of its agricultural loan book onto its Sustainability Farm Loan, supported by its involvement in developing the Sustainable Agriculture Finance Initiative (SAFI).
  • Pāmu collaborating with agricultural peers to enable faster and more impactful resilience actions through the Agri Sector Climate Scenarios

Vicki says the report provides a baseline for The Circle to continue articulating why protecting and investing in our natural capital is essential for our long-term productivity, competitive advantage and economic resilience.

“We’re excited by our pipeline of activity and looking forward to continued collaboration with our Partners and other stakeholders over the year ahead.”
