With infrastructure in New Zealand at a critical intersection, we need to ensure we consider all options, particularly those that can provide multiple benefits to our economy. That’s why natural infrastructure is a valuable, credible tool in the infrastructure toolkit.
The Natural Infrastructure Plan has many sections providing key information, toolkits, and case studies to learn and understand from. It has been brought to life by more than 200 contributors and over 10,000 combined hours of research, debate and collaboration.
Our economy is extrinsically linked to the environment with around 70% of our exports generated from natural capital. The Plan encourages decision-makers to widen the lens through which infrastructure investments are viewed and assessed with greater consideration and recognition of the role nature-based solutions can play in strengthening resilience and restoring our natural capital.
The question is no longer whether we can afford to invest in natural infrastructure.
It is whether we can afford not to.

This was a question posed in our webinar update on our development of a Natural Infrastructure Plan for New Zealand. Infrastructure enables vital services that drive a productive economy, safeguards communities, helps achieve broader environmental goals and supports our wellbeing. But so too does nature.
