Transport Sector Climate Scenarios

Overview

Climate change is no longer a distant threat – it's here, and it's impacting every aspect of our lives, including Aotearoa New Zealand’s vital transport system. Sea-level rise, intensified rainfall, and extreme weather events are contributing to road, rail, and infrastructure damage, costing the New Zealand transport sector billions each year, at the same time as the sector looks to transition to a low-carbon future. As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident, and the imperative to decarbonise more pressing, it's crucial for organisations in the sector to understand how the way we move people and goods into, around, and out of Aotearoa might change in the future.

The Aotearoa Circle, with KPMG as Secretariat, has undertaken this work to develop a set of XRB (External Reporting Board) aligned Integrated Climate-Related Scenarios that explore what the transport sector in Aotearoa New Zealand could look like under different climate futures. These scenarios are intended to provide participants with valuable, collective insights into the future of the sector, as well as building the skills and baseline scenarios needed for entity-level analysis, which are essential for conducting climate risk assessments, and building resilience in the sector.
