Modern Genetic Technologies

The Aotearoa Circle has published two reports examining the potential risks and opportunities associated with changes to New Zealand’s regulatory settings around modern genetic technologies

These reports were commissioned as a result of recommendations in our Agri-Adaptation Roadmap and Mana Kai Priority Action Areas report.

Phase One is a comprehensive exploration of several case studies, focusing on what New Zealand could do with these technologies without prescribing what it should do. Developed by PwC, this work reflects extensive input from experts, incorporating te ao Māori perspectives, community impacts, economic considerations, and potential effects on nature and climate.

Phase Two consists of action pathways including recommended steps and sequencing based on a broad range of expert views to support robust, transparent regulatory decision-making.

Together, these reports aim to inform thoughtful discussion and guide future actions regarding modern genetic technologies in Aotearoa.

Modern Genetic Technology: Applications in Aotearoa Food and Fibre Production

A substantial piece of work that looks at several different case study applications of modern genetic technologies and asks what New Zealand could do regarding modern genetic technologies, rather than attempting to define what we should do.
