Director – Implementation

The Aotearoa Circle brings together leaders from the public and private sectors to restore natural capital, ensuring New Zealand is prosperous for future generations. 

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for driving the implementation of various sector roadmaps and strategies as completed by the Circle through collaborative public and private sector groups. As the Director, they provide a face to the programme, guiding the overall integrity and coherence of its delivery, outputs and impact.

The day-to-day work involves co-ordinating and management of a variety of projects including oversight of any risks and issues arising. Tasks vary widely, ranging from convening key stakeholders and facilitating workshops through to drafting action plans and championing the work of the Circle. There is one direct report, a Project Coordinator.

 The roadmaps completed by the Circle have included the following sectors so ‘expertise’ or experience could be from one or more of these: seafood, agriculture, food, energy, tourism and finance.

 This position is integral to the overall success of the Circle, to help it move past ‘start-up phase’ and develop the capability and capacity needed to achieve the overall purpose.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Convene and lead an implementation group for each workstream. With the buy-in of the group, design, develop and deliver each strategy’s programme of work.

  • Proactively monitor programme progress, resolve issues and drive delivery of the programme.

  • Ensure the overall integrity of the programme - focusing inwardly on alignment with the original kaupapa and outwardly on its practical application and ability for uptake.

  • Define the programme's decision making and accountability arrangements.

  • Manage the programme's budget on behalf of the CEO, monitoring expenditure and costs against delivered and realised benefits as the programme progresses. Help with funding proposals as necessary.

  • Ensure there are sufficient resources and skills within the programme to meet and deliver on expectations.

  • Facilitate the appointment of individuals to project teams. Manage third party contributions (including contractors) to the programme.

  • Manage risks to the programme's success, including the dependencies and interfaces between projects.

  • Identify and guide alignment and integration of relevant sector actions supporting the Circle’s strategy (including projects delivered through partnership, parallel and contracting arrangements).

  • Support communications with all stakeholders. Guide ‘best fit’ mechanisms for the implementation group, relevant stakeholders and/or experts to engage in partnership with the Director – Engagement & Communications.

  • Report the progress of the programme at regular intervals to the CEO and Leadership Group.

  • Comply with all safety regulations and legislative requirements, ensuring that all incidents are reported/recorded/managed in a timely way. Actively ensure a consistently safe, healthy and environmentally aware work place.

  • Subject matter expertise: Has authority in their field and expertise to identify areas where a technical solution would improve or enhance delivery. Can make connections across domains, networks and skill sets that align with the roadmaps.

  • Programme management: Has the management and inter-personal skills to manage/oversee the delivery of a wide range of tasks, prioritise appropriately and deliver integrated outcomes. Can translate work plans into tangible and achievable actions.

  • Business acumen: Sound business case development and comparative analysis skills. Good understanding of the procurement process including negotiation with third parties. Good knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures.

  • Relationship management: Builds trust and confidence with key Partners and Stakeholders, proactively maintains relationships and assists with fostering new relationships and business opportunities that support the objective of The Circle.

  • Communication: Ability to clearly and professionally communicate across various fora (from board meetings to workshops via Teams to drafting project plans). Brings stakeholders along on the journey.

  • Problem solving: Ability to find ways of solving or pre-empting problems.

  • Flexibility: Ability to ebb and flow with the speed and workflow of participating members. Able to understand and adapt to the changing demands on the team (especially from outside the programme).

  • Computer literacy: Has advanced knowledge of, and skills in Microsoft Suite and video conferencing software.
